The Al Neese Jazz Project was formed in February 2007 by Greensboro (NC) saxophonist Scott Adair. The mission of this sextet is to keep alive the classic transcriptions, original music and arrangements of trumpeter Al Neese. A fellow Greensboro native and resident, Al Neese lived in New York City from 1950 to 1975. During that time he immersed himself in the post bop music (also referred to as hard bop) that surrounded him. Among his friends were Charlie Parker, Jackie McLean, Kenny Dorham, Dannie Richmond, Freddie Redd and countless others.
Alan was not only a performer but a true student of the music during that era. The library that he has personally compiled is a treasure that lives on with The Al Neese Jazz Project. In addition to the classic Blue Note recordings with compositions and arrangements by Joe Henderson, Kenny Dorham, Dexter Gordon and numerous others this group also performs timeless pieces by Charles Mingus, Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis and Horace Silver to name a few.
The group consists of Al Neese (trumpet and fluegelhorn), Scott Adair (tenor sax), Turner Battle (piano), Charles Gambetta (bass), Jud Franklin (guitar) and Jay McCracken (drums). Please don't miss this rare opportunity to hear classic Hard Bop and Blue Note classics from a dedicated ensemble.
