DJW/#9 Community,
Now is the time to consider supporting the Durham Jazz workshop/Sharp Nine Gallery, the hub for jazz in the Triangle. You will be supporting the only dedicated jazz space in North Carolina.
Your contributions over the years have helped create a remarkably rare institution: a place where students can develop, a place where young and established musicians can perform, and a place for an appreciative, sophisticated audience to listen to Jazz.
In 2023 we will celebrate, not only surviving the pandemic, but also our 10 years of existence.
During this period donations from the community, totaled $420,000. We also raised another $401,000 in grants from RTI, Square/PPP, the TCF/Forry Fund, Shared Vision Foundation, and several private donors.
By January, 2023, the DJW will have paid $916,000 to musicians (performers and teachers).
In summary, since January 1, 2013, the DJW has:
-Expanded from one rental unit to 3, remodeled and maintained the spaces. (The DJW rent and utilities expenses are over $60k annually)
-Acquired audio/visual equipment, and instruments including a beloved Yamaha piano.
-Presented more than 800 concerts attended by well over 30,000 patrons.
-Acquired a wine and beer license.
-Live Streamed more than 50 concerts during the height of the pandemic.
-Coached 70 (6 week) workshop sessions with over 280 different ensembles (adult/college students).
-Provided scholarships to adult and youth students with financial needs.
-Directed a youth program each school year, working with over 280 students in 36 ensembles (big bands and small groups).
Your contributions made this all possible. Thanks to the jazz musicians and educators who absolutely made our mission possible, and to the audiences who come out and support the concerts. Thanks to the DJW Board of Directors for expert guidance, encouragement and friendships. Many thanks to an amazing dedicated staff of volunteers who have spent over 4000 hours greeting and serving customers, and keeping the performance space immaculate and ready to go night after night. Thank you to the students who participate in our programs. And of course many thanks to all the donors. From monthly sustainers, to folks who leave donations via Instantseats when purchasing tickets, to folks who sponsor select performances and various workshop initiatives as well as the folks who send off an annual check or PayPal payment. We want to express our deepest gratitude. You all make the workshop happen!
If you haven’t done so yet this year, Please DONATE NOW and propel us into another 10 year stretch. All donations are tax deductible.
