Youth Ensembles: 2026 Fall Semester
Saturday, August 29, 10am-12pm: Welcome/Info/Jam Session
This event is an opportunity for students and parents to meet the youth director, Baron Tymas and other
youth ensemble faculty as they talk about the program and answer questions. There will also be a short
jam session with faculty for those students who want to play.
The semester begins September 12, and each group meets once per week.
Youth Combos directed by Dexter Moses and Butler Knowles, Saturdays 10:30am-noon. Students work on ensemble skills and improvisation while learning classic small group repertoire of Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane and others.
Youth Big Band directed by Jason Bohde: Saturdays, 9am-10:30am
Traditional big band (sax, trombone, trumpet, piano/guitar/bass/drums)
Advanced Jazz Ensemble directed by Kobie Watkins : Sundays 9:30-11am. Placement by audition or
recommendation only. Music selections will be advanced to professional level. For more information
Expectations for all DJW students:
● Arrive at rehearsals and performances on time and with the proper materials (e.g., instruments,
sheet music, pencils, and/or tablets as designated by the instructors). Directors will NOT print
parts for forgotten music.
● Practice at home, so you are prepared for rehearsals.
● Treat your peers and the environment respectfully.
● Put away your cell phone during rehearsal
Tuition is $450 and Final concerts will be on December 12 & 13. ***There will be no rehearsals
Thanksgiving weekend (November 28 & 29).
Students must fill out the Youth Registration Form.
Scholarships are available based on financial need. The Durham Jazz Workshop never turns down an
eligible student based on money. Scholarship Form
