Course Descriptions
New Class - Sharp 9 Little Big Band
Robert Zimmerman Instructor
Description:
This group will consist of 3 or more horns plus rhythm section, not limited to any specific instrumentation, with an upper limit of about 10 players—big enough to get a rich and varied ensemble sound but small enough so that everyone can have some creative input. It will be accessible to both readers and improvisers (at intermediate and advanced levels).
The material for the group will include some big band-style charts, with a mix of written-out ensemble and solo improvisation. But we’ll also make some head arrangements, Kansas City-style, where backgrounds and riffs are worked out collectively. We may also look in the direction of New Orleans and try some collective improvisation. The repertoire will include jazz, blues, and Latin standards but will range beyond that, based on the interests of ensemble members.

Time and Duration: Class will meet on Monday evenings, 6-8 pm in the main hall. The session will run for 6 weeks. Fee: $300
DJW’s Stringed Improvisation Collective
This is a combo designed for improvisers of stringed instruments looking for a fun and gentle 'leg-up' for playing Jazz with others. The instrumentation will vary depending on enrollment, but students often fall into a couple of categories: plucked strings (like mandolins, ukuleles, banjo, acoustic guitar, harps, etc.) and bowed strings (fiddles, violins, violas, and cellos).
Skills acquired during the session include strategies for playing tricky tunes with one another, improvising and 'comping' over chord progressions, basic arranging for strings, intros and endings and other facets of small-group jazz. A ballad, a standard, and a blues will be sent out after enrollment with two or three more tunes determined collectively at the first meeting.
This group meets Tuesday from 7-9pm and is coached by Kenneth Stewart. Fee: $300
Combos: Groups are led by a “coach” and work on a handful of jazz standards (swing, bebop, latin rhythms, ballads, ¾ ) exploring melodies, improvising over chord progressions, learning common intro’s and ending’s, “trading with drums” and other facets of small group jazz. Groups are generally comprised of horns, piano and/or guitar, bass and drums. We have a number of combos running each round from beginner level to advanced. The DJW will consult with new registrants on finding the appropriate level combo. We offer morning, afternoon and evening groups Monday's, Wednesday's & Thursdays. Fee: $300
Jazz Vocal Performance Workshop w/Angela Bingham
Skill level: this class is for singers who have some experience singing jazz standards who want to increase their skills in performance. The first two sessions will include vocal instruction, with the remaining 4 sessions dedicated to putting performance into practice with a full band. Workshop topics: warm up exercises, working with a band, phrasing (swing, bossa nova, bebop, etc.), improvising exercises, how to effectively learn tunes, lyrics and storytelling, listening, getting your "book" together / learning your keys, brainstorming concepts for your own arrangements, finding YOUR voice. This class is limited to 4 students to allow adequate time for participants to work with the band. Time: Wednesdays 6-8pm. Fee: $300
