Outreach program
Shaquim Muldrow is an extraordinarily impressive young man. He is kind, engaging, personable, and very professional.
He has managed the outreach project this past spring. Tackling the challenge of contacting schools, working with music teachers and principals to schedule performances and master classes at 8 schools, lining up an ensemble of other professional colleagues to join him in the scheduled appearances, and doing all this while juggling his own academic responsibilities in conjunction with wrapping up his graduate studies this spring.
He worked in 8 Durham public schools (3 high schools, 1 middle school, and 4 elementary schools). He and his ensemble colleagues conducted performances in all 8 schools, including multiple performances involving several, but not all grade levels in the elementary schools, and performances and master classes at the middle and high schools. We estimated (“back-of -the-envelope” calculation) that the project reached approximately 1325 students: Approximately 1175 elementary students attended a performance; 100 middle school students and 50 high school students attended a performance during their regular music or band classes; and 75 of these middle and high school students also participated in master classes held the day after the performances at their respective schools.
Shaquim organized either a quartet or quintet of local jazz musicians for each of the 8 engagements. A total of 9 local professional musicians were involved, including 3 local undergraduate music majors, 4 graduate professionals (including Shaquim himself), and 2 recent graduates. Shaquim included students from NCCU and UNCW in the ensembles.
Shaquim Thank you,
"Thank you again for the wealth of information you and the band provided for me and my students." quote from teacher.
